My journey creating products from Cirque du Soleil to ChatGPTs

Creative tinkering can be your superpower. It’s a statement that resonates deeply with my 30-year journey through product development, business strategy, and startup creation. This obsession with finding original solutions through iterative processes has literally saved my professional life. Without it, I could never have accomplished as much as I have, including landing projects with some of the world’s largest brands, like Cirque du Soleil.

Creative tinkering, with its inevitable blend of failures and successes, has been the cornerstone of my professional achievements. From launching a successful collection of unique space parachute messenger bags to working for seven years with Cirque du Soleil, my journey exemplifies how creative tinkering can lead to sustainable and profitable ventures. In an era where AI tools can scale content creation infinitely, creative tinkering remains a secret weapon for true innovation.

The Journey Begins: From E-commerce Innovation to Messenger Bags

In the early days of e-commerce, I worked for a startup that developed a clothes-fitting algorithm for online shopping, a revolutionary idea that was, unfortunately, too early for its time. After spending 18 months working with Amazon, Nike, Adidas, and others, our startup ran out of money, and I found myself at a crossroads during a wave of internet company layoffs.

Reflecting on my next steps, I decided to leverage my e-commerce insights. I sought a product that was free from the constraints of sizing and seasonality — enter the messenger bag. A trip to NYC’s garment district confirmed their popularity and potential. However, to avoid the fate of ubiquitous copies flooding the market such as Louis Vuitton or GUCCI bag copies, I needed a product that was uniquely difficult to replicate. That’s when inspiration struck: why not create messenger bags from nearly impossible-to-copy materials, like a piece of the US space shuttle landing parachute?

While I couldn’t source the US space shuttle parachute, I found an alternative in the form of a Soyuz parachute piece from Russian astronaut Alexander Serebrov. The piece of parachute was in his garage covering an old Lada. What were the odds that such material was available? I happened to know someone who had spent 20 years training astronauts in Russia. Creative tinkering sometimes works in mysterious ways. I contacted Serebrov and after a few months listening to a space legend telling me in Russian how stupid my idea was…I ended up with a small piece of Soyuz TM-8 Landing parachute. This improbable connection led to the creation of Soyuz Space messenger bags, which sold out within 24 hours on eBay. This success paved the way for a business based on “Pieces of Adventure,” featuring materials from America’s Cup sails, Mt. Everest tents, and Cirque du Soleil’s big tops.

Years later, Cirque du Soleil’s head of merchandising approached me, inspired by my work with unique materials. I went to a large warehouse and was presented with gigantic bags and piles of old tents that Guy Laliberte, founder of Cirque du Soleil, had accumulated over the last 20 years. He apparently had never thrown out any of the old tents. I was tasked with creating products from their old tents. This opportunity turned into a seven-year collaboration, developing everything from Big Top bags to exclusive gift bags for the CEO’s yacht.

This story isn’t just about the bags or the astronaut’s parachute piece. It’s about the essence of creative tinkering: connecting seemingly unrelated elements to innovate and solve problems. Like Steve Jobs, who didn’t invent the mobile phone but revolutionized it, creative tinkering is about generating and linking ideas to create something new and valuable.

Defining Creative Tinkering

First and foremost we should define what is creative tinkering and what it is not. The Oxford Dictionary provides a definition that seems to reduce tinkering to wasting your time:

‘’ …an attempt to repair or improve something in a casual or desultory way, often to no useful effect. “he spent hours tinkering with the car”

This seems highly reductive especially since desultory means: ……lacking a plan, purpose, or enthusiasm……

Merriam-Webster provides a more interesting definition:

‘’…..to work in the manner of a tinker especially : to repair, adjust, or work with something in an unskilled or experimental manner : FIDDLE

…..always tinkering with his car : to repair, adjust, or experiment with

I like this simple definition that includes multiple elements of creative tinkering as a process:

Creative tinkering is the process of experimenting with ideas, materials, and techniques in an open-ended, playful manner to explore new possibilities and innovate. It involves hands-on activities, iterative learning, and the willingness to embrace trial and error, leading to unique and original outcomes. This approach encourages curiosity, flexibility, and a growth mindset, making it a valuable practice for both personal development and professional innovation.

Creative tinkering has driven significant advancements throughout history, from Leonardo Da Vinci to Steve Jobs. Today, AI tools offer new methodologies to enhance this process, helping entrepreneurs identify and evaluate business opportunities more effectively. Whether you are a solopreneur or an aspiring side hustler, identifying niches and business opportunities may be easier than ever using a Creative Tinkering approach and AI tools to reduce risks and build a profitable business.

Fundamental Concepts in Creative Tinkering

Creative tinkering involves a hands-on, experimental approach to problem-solving and innovation. Here are some fundamental concepts that underpin this process:

1. Emphasize Process Over Product:

Focus on exploration and experimentation rather than the final outcome. Documenting and discussing intermediate stages and failed experiments can lead to more innovative results.

2. Set Themes, Not Challenges:

Broad themes provide a framework for exploration while allowing creative freedom. Themes should foster shared experiences but be broad enough for personal interests.

3. Highlight Diverse Examples:

Showcasing a variety of examples can inspire divergent thinking and highlight possibilities within a theme.

4. Tinker with opposites:

Assemble product or service concepts that may seem opposite. The arrangement of ideas should encourage unexpected combinations.

5. Engage with People, Not Just tools and Materials:

Conversations and collaborations enrich the tinkering process with new perspectives and ideas.

6. Pose Questions Instead of Giving Answers:

Encourage deeper exploration and critical thinking by asking questions rather than providing solutions.

7. Combine Diving In with Stepping Back:

Balance immersion in making with periods of reflection to reassess goals and explore new paths.

Enhancing Creative Tinkering with AI

For solopreneurs looking to gain financial freedom, AI can augment creative tinkering in several ways:

1. Idea Generation: AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT can brainstorm ideas, suggest improvements, and provide creative content.

2. Market Analysis:AI-powered tools analyze market trends and consumer behavior, helping identify business opportunities.

3. Prototyping and Testing: AI can simulate design iterations and predict performance, streamlining the prototyping process.

4. Customer Feedback and Iteration: AI tools aggregate and analyze feedback, guiding iterative improvements.

5. Predictive Analytics:AI predicts the commercial potential of products by analyzing historical data and market trends.

Creative tinkering allows you to explore ideas without succumbing to analysis paralysis. Embrace unstructured time to experiment, be persistent, and shape yourself into a die-hard tinkerer. Use AI tools to enhance your tinkering process, unlock new opportunities, and bring your ideas to life more effectively. By integrating these concepts, you can harness the power of creative tinkering to achieve professional success and personal fulfillment through freedom to work on projects you want; where you want and when you want.
