As I reflect on a 30-year career as a marketing professional and On-and-Off solopreneur, I’m struck by the twists and turns that have shaped my career and how lucky I have been.

You make your own luck but my choices for the most part have brought me exactly where I wanted to be NOW. And that is important to know for the rest of the journey.

From the bustling corridors of large telecommunication companies to the frenetic energy of e-commerce startups, and finally to the creative chaos of my own marketing agency, each chapter has brought its unique set of challenges and invaluable lessons.

Today, I find myself at the intersection of technology and entrepreneurship, developing AI tools using creative tinkering to scale my business as a one-man team and hoping to share my experiences with fellow solopreneurs. This is my story — a tale of perseverance, adaptation, luck, and the relentless pursuit of freedom and especially creative tinkering in the world of business.

My Corporate Years: Learning the Ropes

My career really began in the telecommunications industry fresh out of grad school, where I spent the first decade honing my skills in a corporate environment. I had been a RepoMan for FORD Motor Credit for a few months before grad school; but I would rather forget that part if you don’ mind.

These years were crucial in building a foundation of knowledge and understanding the intricacies of large-scale operations. I traveled the world selling telecom solutions and being at the forefront of what would become the internet. However, I quickly realized that the corporate world, with its rigid structures and slow decision-making processes, was at odds with my entrepreneurial spirit.

Bureaucracy and Stifled Creativity are the biggest hurdle in the corporate world navigating the labyrinth of process handbooks and procedures. Simple ideas often get lost in endless meetings and approval processes. I found myself yearning for an environment where innovation could flourish unencumbered by red tape.

First lesson Learned: While frustrating, this experience taught me the importance of systems and processes — knowledge that would prove invaluable in my future ventures. I learned to balance structure with flexibility, a skill that has served me well as a solopreneur.

The Startup Phase: Embracing Chaos and Innovation

Eager for change, I transitioned to the world of e-commerce startups. This phase was exhilarating — fast-paced, innovative, and full of possibilities. It was there that I truly began to develop my entrepreneurial muscles. I worked in business development on early e-commerce ventures with Amazon.com, eBay, Nike, Adidas, LandsEnd, American Eagle, Ralph Lauren and JCPenney. All large companies seeking expert advice in e-commerce and product marketing online.

Startups, by nature, operate with limited resources. I found myself happy juggling multiple roles — from business development director to marketing strategist. The lack of a clear structure was both liberating and overwhelming but as with most startups the company ran out of money and most employees including all business development were laid off. We are a great technology but too disruptive, too early.

Lesson Learned: This period taught me that the most innovative technology seldom wins. In the startup world “ Money talks. Bulls**t walks. ” Being a Creative tinkerer can help you compensate for technological shortcomings.

I also realized that no matter how hard you work and how much success you may have with clients money is the lifeblood of startups and your are at the mercy of some finance guy deciding your fate.

Launching a Product Marketing Agency: The Birth of True Independence

Armed with experience from both corporate and startup worlds, I took the leap and started my own product marketing agency selling original messenger bags with actual Space Station mission landing parachutes(Soyuz bags). This marked the beginning of my journey as a true solopreneur selling unique products from my basement and operating a rudimentary but fully transactional website.

Starting from scratch meant building a reputation online from the ground up and actually applying the advice I had been giving Nike and Amazon.com. Sleepless nights packing orders, confirming shipments and fixing the website..

Lesson Learned: Persistence, consistency and …creative tinkering are key. I learned to leverage my unique experiences and perspectives to differentiate myself in a crowded market and truly think outside the box…selling bags featuring space parachutes to astronauts from NASA(seriously).

The Golden Years: Cirque du Soleil product tinkering

My persistence paid off, and I soon found myself working with some of the biggest names in the business world — Coca-Cola, and a seven-year stint with Cirque du Soleil. These experiences were the highlight of my career as a product marketing specialist.

We all know how creative and unique Cirque du Soleil is and to have them call me to create products was truly one of the highlights of my short solopreneur career at the time. Working with such an industry giant meant dealing with high-pressure situations and exacting standards. Balancing these demanding projects with my personal life proved to be a constant struggle.

Lesson Learned: A large demanding client can be a blessing and a curse, Learning to apply creativity to products to monetize originality. Cirque du Soleil is a master at re-inventing (the circus experience) , scale and duplicate a successful formula. All great lessons for my next adventures.

Weathering the Storm: The 2008 Financial Crisis

Just as I was riding high on my success, the 2008 financial crisis hit, sending shockwaves through the business world. Marketing budgets were slashed across the board, and many of my clients were forced to scale back or completely halt their projects including Cirque du Soleil.

The sudden drop in client work was a wake-up call. I realized the vulnerability of relying too heavily on a few large clients and the importance of diversification.

Lesson Learned: This period reinforced the need for financial planning and the value of building a diverse client portfolio. I learned to create multiple income streams and to always have a contingency plan — advice I now share with other solopreneurs.

The Tech Revolution: Embracing AI and Creative Tinkering

As the business landscape continues to evolve, I recognize the need to adapt once again. The rise of artificial intelligence and automation tools presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

Staying relevant in a rapidly changing technological landscape is a must. Keeping up with the pace of technological change while running a business single-handedly was daunting. I had to continuously educate myself and experiment with new tools to remain competitive.

Lesson Learned: Embracing change and being an early adopter of new technologies can give solopreneurs a significant edge. I learned to view technology not as a threat, but as a superpower in scaling my business.

The Present: Developing Tools for Creative Tinkerers and Solopreneurs

My latest project brings together all the lessons I’ve learned over the past three decades. I’m now focused on developing tools to teach Creative Tinkering and help solopreneurs like myself scale their businesses efficiently.

Tools (AI) are great but a Creative Mindset may be more useful. There is no point in having the best high performance tools if you have nothing to sell.

Creative tinkering has enabled me to find product ideas and design marketing strategies. AI and all the possibilities it creates for solopreneurs is great but in order to use those tools you need a business, a product, something to SELL and MAKE MONEY FROM. That is where a creative tinkering mindset becomes useful.

Image by Leonardo.ai. The Happy Solopreneur’s Motivation: Freedom, Creativity, and Impact.

Throughout my journey, one thing has remained constant — the desire for freedom and the drive to create something meaningful. As a Solopreneur, I’m not just collecting a paycheck; I’m building a legacy.

The motivation of solopreneurs often goes beyond financial rewards. We seek:

1. Autonomy:The freedom to make decisions and chart our own course.

2. Creativity: The ability to bring our unique visions to life without compromise.

3. Flexibility: The power to design our work around our lives, not vice versa.

4. Impact:The opportunity to directly see how our work affects clients and the market.

5. Continuous Learning:The challenge of wearing multiple hats pushes us to constantly grow and evolve.

Advice for Aspiring Solopreneurs

To those embarking on their own solopreneur journey, I offer these pieces of advice:

1. Embrace Continuous Learning: The business world is ever-changing. Stay curious and be willing to adapt.

2. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and supporters who understand your journey.

3. Leverage Technology: Use AI and automation tools to scale your efforts and focus on high-value tasks.

4. Prioritize Self-Care: Your business is only as healthy as you are. Don’t neglect your physical and mental well-being.

5. Stay True to Your Vision: Remember why you started this journey. Let your passion and purpose guide your decisions.

The Solopreneur’s Journey Continues

As I look back on my 30-year career, I’m filled with gratitude for the challenges that have shaped me and the successes that have fueled my journey.

The path of a solopreneur is not for the faint of heart — it’s filled with obstacles, uncertainties, and moments of doubt. But it’s also a path of immense reward, personal growth, and the unparalleled satisfaction of building something truly your own.

To my fellow solopreneurs: embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and never stop innovating.

The world needs your unique vision and relentless spirit.

As we navigate this ever-changing business landscape together, remember that every obstacle is an opportunity in disguise, and every setback is a setup for a comeback.

Here’s to the next few years…. of entrepreneurial adventures!
